The Frosthaven rulebook is set up really nicely so it was easy to learn and refer to the new rules, and it's arranged well for referencing. It took maybe 3 scenarios until I felt like I knew what I was doing, and I think I was still learning monster turn rules for many scenarios after that. When I first played Gloomhaven, the rules were overwhelming and required a lot of mid-game lookups. Learning the new rules: I found this to be a really smooth experience. This combined with these new characters and I’m finding scenarios significantly more fun to play! The situations that have come up have required adapting to and often coming up with new ways to take advantage of our characters’ abilities. Scenarios: I’ll keep this as vague as possible to keep this spoiler-free, but all 5 of the scenarios we’ve played so far have been super varied and interesting. I was fully expecting the Drifter to be a Brute clone but looking through the cards I imagine they would play really differently! I’m sure I haven’t thought about it as hard as others here, but all 6 starting classes look really interesting and varied. I’m not finding Blinkblade overwhelmingly complicated, but it definitely took me a few scenarios until I was comfortable with the play patterns. Also, since resources can be donated to Frosthaven, looting feels like it’s for the greater good! I have been heavily using loot abilities whenever I can.Ĭharacters: I have been loving playing Blinkblade and my partner is really enjoying playing Deathwalker. The loot deck is exciting! I love flipping over a card and seeing what I get, even though I know everything in the deck. It was nice to do, but we prioritized even slight strategic advantages over picking up another coin. Loot cards: My partner and I never worried too much about looting in Gloomhaven. We’ve brewed 2 potions so far, and we loved the excitement of finding out what potion we unlocked. While the items and potions definitely start off a little less powerful than Gloomhaven, earning the cards feels rewarding. The overall progress is centralized and highly visible in a way that makes us keep wanting to go back and do more. I am using /u/Dysentz’s Blinkblade guide (which has been phenomenally helpful by the way) but even so it does feel like we’re carving out our own strategy more than we have in the past.īuildings and the Outpost Phase: This has been super fun for us! We love that every Outpost phase it feels like we’re making progress, either by building or upgrading a building, brewing a new potion, crafting new items or all of the above. So far we’ve been playing as Blinkblade and Deathwalker.
